ISO 9001:2026 Supplier Requirements: Certification, Evaluation and Clause 8.4

One of the most common questions organizations ask is whether ISO 9001 requires suppliers to be ISO 9001 certified. The answer is no. ISO 9001 Clause 8.4 requires organizations to control externally provided processes, products, and services and to establish appropriate criteria for evaluating, selecting, monitoring, and re-evaluating suppliers. Third-party ISO 9001 certification can be part of that process, but it is not the only acceptable method.

The updated Q&A explains practical approaches to ISO 9001 supplier evaluation and qualification, including:

  • ISO 9001 certification by an accredited certification body
  • Second-party supplier audits
  • Supplier self-assessments and questionnaires
  • Evaluation based on quality and delivery performance
  • Risk-based combinations of supplier qualification methods

The update also addresses the move toward ISO 9001:2026. Clause 8.4 requirements for the control of external providers remain fundamentally familiar, while supplier evaluation may increasingly consider broader organizational risks and factors such as environmental and sustainability credentials.

We have also updated the guidance on the documented information and supplier records organizations should maintain, including approved supplier lists, qualification records, supplier certificates where applicable, performance monitoring, re-evaluation records, and actions taken when supplier performance is unsatisfactory.
