SO 9001:2026 Internal Audits: Follow the Process, Not Just the Checklist
An audit checklist helps us remember what to ask. But answering every question in clause order does not necessarily tell us whether the quality management system works in practice. Consider a customer order. The auditor can follow it from contract review through planning, service or production, delivery, and customer feedback. At each step, ask: What was supposed to happen? What actually happened? What evidence shows the result? This approach makes it easier to see how QMS processes connect—and where a problem may have passed from one process to another. How to make an internal audit more useful Plan around processes and their importance. Give more attention to processes affected by recent changes, customer complaints, or previous findings.
