SO 9001:2026 Internal Audits: Follow the Process, Not Just the Checklist

An audit checklist helps us remember what to ask. But answering every question in clause order does not necessarily tell us whether the quality management system works in practice.

Consider a customer order. The auditor can follow it from contract review through planning, service or production, delivery, and customer feedback. At each step, ask: What was supposed to happen? What actually happened? What evidence shows the result? This approach makes it easier to see how QMS processes connect—and where a problem may have passed from one process to another.

How to make an internal audit more useful

  • Plan around processes and their importance. Give more attention to processes affected by recent changes, customer complaints, or previous findings. There is no need to squeeze every clause into every audit.
  • Ask for examples. A documented procedure explains the intended method. A recent order, record, or decision shows how the method was applied.
  • Record the evidence. A “Yes” or “No” is more useful when the auditor can explain what was examined and why it supports the conclusion.
  • Follow up on findings. Check whether corrective actions addressed the cause and whether the problem has recurred.

What should change in an ISO 9001:2026 audit?

The 2026 edition calls for another look at some familiar topics. For example, when auditing organizational context, ask how the organization determined whether climate change is relevant to its QMS—and what supports that conclusion. When auditing leadership, look for evidence of how top management promotes quality culture and ethical behaviour beyond statements in a policy.

Risks and opportunities also deserve separate questions. How were relevant risks analyzed and evaluated? Which opportunities were identified, what actions followed, and how was their effectiveness evaluated? The point is to trace decisions into the processes where they matter.

We have updated our ISO 9001:2026 Audit Checklist with questions for these and other 2026 changes. It connects each question to a process where it can be asked and includes auditor tips on what to verify. The checklist comes in editable Word and Excel formats.
